On-site energy provider Capstone Energy+, Inc. announced the installation of two C1000 Signature Series microturbines at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California. Delivered in partnership with BSD Builders, Inc., the system provides 2 megawatts (MW) of behind-the-meter combined heat and power (CHP) to support critical healthcare operations.
The multi-megawatt installation generates on-site electricity while capturing thermal waste heat to fulfill most of the hospital’s space heating and domestic hot water demands. Led by President and CEO Vince Canino, Capstone Energy+ engineered the project to achieve a 75% overall system efficiency rating. System integration is in its final phase, with full commissioning targeted for October 2026 and complete startup expected by year-end.
Once fully operational, the behind-the-meter microturbines will feature island-mode capability, enabling the medical center to disconnect from the main utility grid and operate independently during regional power outages or natural disasters.

The installation of this Capstone Energy+ system is significant because healthcare facilities require uninterrupted power to maintain essential life-support systems and patient care services. For example, during severe weather events or grid blackouts in Southern California, the microturbines provide 2 MW of continuous off-grid electricity, shielding emergency rooms and operating suites from unexpected power losses.
By utilizing combined heat and power, the system recaptures thermal energy that would otherwise be wasted in standard electrical generation. This dual-output setup reduces operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions while helping healthcare systems meet long-term sustainability goals without compromising power reliability.
Furthermore, deploying modular behind-the-meter generation addresses growing strain on public utility grids. Providing reliable, fuel-flexible energy on-site gives hospitals an additional layer of redundancy, ensuring continuous operations during emergency grid disruptions.
Next Steps for Capstone Energy+
Following the final integration phase at Scripps Mercy Hospital, Capstone Energy+ and BSD Builders will execute system commissioning through October 2026, followed by final operational testing before year-end.
Looking ahead, Capstone Energy+ plans to expand its multi-megawatt microturbine deployments across other mission-critical sectors, including data centers, industrial facilities, and agricultural operations. The company will also continue offering flexible Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) contracts, such as power purchase agreements and embedded service plans, to help commercial clients adopt resilient energy systems with predictable lifecycle costs.
